Snow day procedures for Montezuma Cortez School District Re-1
Winter conditions present unique challenges for the school district. When a winter storm transpires, the school district must act promptly to assess the situation and make decisions we feel are in best interest of our students and staff. Safety is our primary concern.
There are a wide range of road conditions in our county. We need to assess road safety and weather conditions from Pleasant View to McElmo, roads to the south, Towaoc and all county roads to the east. Conditions often vary considerably within the county. District staff is in constant communication with county and city personnel to determine road conditions and road-plowing progress. If a storm lands, we are on the roads by 4:00 AM to determine conditions and road safety. Generally, school will not be cancelled unless there is an excess of 8 inches of snow or if wind and drifting conditions make bus travel hazardous.
A number of media outlets are made aware of a school delay or closing. The district web page continuously updates current information about weather conditions. Local radio stations and TV outlets will have information as soon as a closing or delay is determined.
We encourage parents to exercise their own discretion regarding driving conditions and the ability of their student to drive on snow packed or icy roads. The school district’s number one concern is student and public safety as we assess conditions and determine a course of action. For additional information contact the Administrative Office at 565-7522. |
