Dear Montezuma-Cortez Middle School Families and Students,
It’s hard to believe that we are at the end of another school year. I wanted to reach out and provide you with some updates on MCMS and our plans for next year. First, as many of you know, our Principal Ms. Ott has announced that she is retiring at the end of this year. We are very grateful for Ms. Ott’s service at MCMS, first as a teacher and then as our Principal. The school demonstrated significant improvements in academics and accreditation under her leadership. I wish her the best in her retirement.
We conducted a national search for a new principal for MCMS with the goal of selecting someone that had demonstrated leadership and commitment to continuing to build a strong school culture, engaging parents and students, and continuing the academic gains that MCMS has achieved these past three years. We interviewed several strong candidates and the committee ultimately selected Drew Pearson. As most of you know, Mr. Pearson has served as the Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at MCMS for the past three years. Prior to that role, Mr. Pearson served as an interim Principal in Mancos and taught at elementary and middle school levels in Mancos and Cortez for five years.
I am excited to work with Mr. Pearson, the MCMS teachers and staff, and you all as partners in creating this next chapter for MCMS. We remain committed to ensuring all our students are engaged in a positive learning environment and are gaining the skills they need to be successful in high school. We do not yet know what next year will bring with the uncertainty of the Coronavirus, but I am confident that Mr. Pearson’s leadership and relationships with our staff, students, and families will help guide MCMS through whatever challenges await while keeping the needs of our students at the forefront.
Thank you for your support of MCMS. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time with any questions, concerns, or suggestions about how we can continue to serve your student’s needs.
Lori Haukeness, Superintendent
