Guard Rail Update: You Have Been Heard

Guard Rail Update: You Have Been Heard

Lewis parents & families,

As many of you may be aware last February there was a single car accident on Hwy 491 that resulted in a vehicle coming through our fence and crashing into the 3-5 playground. Since that time we (Lewis and the school district) have been engaged with CDOT to have safety measures added to this area of 491. While CDOT has shared the cost of the guard railing that you now see, we feel that guard railing is not enough and that there should be a reduction in speed on 491. CDOT does not agree with a speed reduction and continually works to deny this request.

We have another meeting w/ CDOT this Thursday at 1pm and would appreciate anyone that would like to join us. Please consider joining this meeting that we feel is incredibly important for the safety of our students!!! The more voices that are at the meeting the better.

UPDATE:

Your voices have been heard! Thank you to everyone who was involved in the latest meeting! CDOT has agreed and will put up flashing signage to indicate an intersection at the school and a suggested reduced speed limit to 55 mph.  The guardrail has been installed along the highway.  There will be some new fencing installed in between the guardrail and the playground area.  Next CDOT meeting is February 11th.
