The Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 Gifted and Talented Program is budgeted through a combination of District and State Funds. The State Funds are distributed to the Regional Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) units throughout the state. The Regional BOCES then distributes the funds to the school districts in their area. Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 is a member of the San Juan BOCES which includes 9 school districts in Southwest Colorado. The 9 districts include, Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1, Dove Creek, Dolores, Mancos, Durango, Silverton, Bayfield, Ignacio, and Pagosa Springs. The San Juan BOCES’ website is


The BOCES of Colorado provide educational services to two or more school districts that alone cannot afford the services, or find it advantageous and cost-effective to cooperate with other districts. They address a variety of needs in special education that include Gifted and Talented.


The budget table below shows how the State Gifted Funds received by the district through the BOCES

were spent in the 2013/2014 school year.


This budget table does not include the District General Fund expenditures for the Gifted and Talented Program. The District General Fund pays the blance of the salaries and benefits for one full time gifted and talented coordinator and one half time gifted and talented personnel (based at Cortez Middle School).
